A Remove Soul by any other name...

The M10 Magic:2010 spoiler reveals plenty of renames -- reprints of existing cards, but with new names. My first reaction was that Magic was renaming staples to force players into buying new product in able to be order to play with them. Wizards, I'm sure, would respond by saying it changed the cards for flavor reasons. I'm going to break down a few of the renames here.

Essence Scatter -- 1U -- Instant -- Counter target creature spell
aka Remove Soul -- 1U -- Instant -- counter target creature spell

It seems odd to me that they renamed Remove Soul, especially when they recently made a textless version of it. Textless spells are supposedly so recognizable that we don't need reminder text -- we KNOW what Remove Soul does. And now it's gone.

So why rename it? I admit, on at least a couple of occasions, I've seen new players confused by this card. Unfamiliar with the idea of counterspells, they think Remove Soul ought to be able to Remove the Soul of a creature in play... that's what the picture looks like, that's what the name sounds like. So I can see the argument for a name change. However, might it still seem to a new player like Essence Scatter ought to Scatter the Essence of a creature in play?

Elite Vanguard -- W -- Creature/Human Soldier -- 2/1
aka Savannah Lions -- W -- Creature/Cat -- 2/1

I have no problem with the creature-type change here... now your one-drop has lots more potential synergy with your other cards.

Act of Treason -- 2R -- Sorcery -- Gain control of target creature until end of turn. Untap that creature. It gains haste until end of turn.
aka Threaten -- 2R -- Sorcery -- Untap target creature and gain control of it until end of turn. That creature gains haste until end of turn.

Threaten has/had great flavor. I'm going to BULLY your guy into working for me, see? If he doesn't, I'm going to burn down his mom's hut. Very RED of me. "Act of Treason" has BLUE flavor... I'm going to manipulate your guy's emotions until he commits an act of betrayal? I find this name change unnecessary and strange.

Divination -- 2U -- Sorcery -- Draw two cards.
aka Counsel of the Soratami -- 2U -- Sorcery -- Draw two cards.

Okay, I can see wanting to nix the reference to the Soratami, since they're no where else in Coreland. Maybe someone in R&D wanted to forget Kamigawa block ever happened. They wouldn't be alone.

Doom Blade -- 1B -- Instant -- Destroy target nonblack creature.
not exactly Terror -- 1B -- Instant -- Destroy target nonartifact, nonblack creature. It can't be regenerated.

Not an exact rename... black gains the ability to destroy artifact creatures, but loses the ability to kill regenerators. Terror is one of those iconic cards, and I'm not sure this change makes sense either. The idea is that black can't kill artifact creatures because they don't have souls, but anything else nonblack that it touches is just hopelessly dead. I suppose creatures with regeneration just got better.

Dread Warlock -- 1BB -- Creature/ Human Wizard -- 2/2 -- Dread Warlock can't be blocked except by black creatures.
strictly better than Severed Legion -- 1BB -- Creature/Zombie -- 2/2 -- Fear (This creature can't be blocked except by artifact creatures and/or black creatures.)

I guess artifacts got soul. Is Fear gone?

Civic Wayfinder loses his Elfness and becomes a Human Scout who enters the Battlefield instead of coming into play... Sabretooth Tiger becomes a Viashino... Nessian Courser becomes Centaur Courser... minor alterations. Still, all in all, I'm cynical about these name changes. I still feel like the idea is to nudge sales of the new product, and that we can look forward to more such changes every new Core set. Meaning, one day you may be playing with Huge Growth, Keebler Elf, and Wrath of Dog.

4/10/09 -- Nevermaker Mannequin

I finally get to play at FNM tonight for the first time in months, so I get to run my Nevermaker deck through a gauntlet.

Magic the Gathering Nevermaker card

Nevermaker Mannequin

Ponder x4
Unsummon x4
Shriekmaw x4
Ravenous Rats x4
Turn to Mist x4
Mulldrifter x4
Nevermaker x4
Makeshift Mannequin x4
Murderous Redcap x4
Crumbling Necropolis x1
Arcane Sanctum x1
Grixis Panorama x2
Esper Panorama x2
Island x9
Swamp x9

Sideboard
Puppeteer Clique x3
Shadowfeed x4
Flashfreeze x4
Dragon's Claw x4

Originally, I made this deck mono-blue, to abuse the synergy of Vedalken Mastermind and Nevermaker. Unfortunately, trying to keep Vedalken Mastermind alive meant devoting a ton of counterspells to the deck... which is fine, but in today's Standard, Kithkin and red decks are just too fast for no-mass-removal blue to keep up with. I thought about going blue/white for Wrath and Reveillark, but blue/black seemed more fun and more economical. A Nevermaker deck shouldn't have a bunch of rare cards in it!

This version is untuned and untested, but the idea is still to satisfy my love of Time Ebb effects as often as possible with Nevermaker. The deck should take advantage of tempo by getting card advantage with CIP creatures and damage stacking during combat. Unsummon and Turn to Mist are cheap and serve double duty, messing up an opponent's combat or getting Murderous Redcap, Nevermaker, Ravenous Rats, Shriekmaw and Mulldrifter in and out of play. Makeshift Mannequin is backup. Adding Reveillark to this deck should make it silly but I wanted to keep it budget and not add rare lands. The sideboard is mostly red hate because I anticipate still getting rolled by burn decks with Demigod of Revenge. I may add Infest to the board. Tournament report to follow.

1:26 a.m. -- very tired! I made Top 8 with the deck, going 3-1-1 over five rounds of Swiss. I lost in Top 8 2-1 to a black/green deck featuring Bitterblossom, Garruk Wildspeaker, Treetop Village, Mutavault, Chameleon Colossus, Nameless Inversion, Kitchen Finks... who plays good cards like those? Kitchen Finks were a problem all night long because I really didn't want to Shriekmaw them OR Nevermaker them. I replaced Puppeteer Clique with Infest in the sideboard, but it wasn't as good for me as it seemed like it would be. I boarded in Flashfreeze OFTEN and it was very good. Murderous Redcap was hit or miss. I think in the next version of this deck, Redcap will become Obelisk of Esper. This will force the deck to lean very heavily on Mulldrifter for card advantage, but very often I wanted to play Nevermaker and Unsummon it, or play Mulldrifter and Turn to Mist it, but I was a mana short. Also, with no rares in the land-base, I got off to some slow starts... I almost never wanted to take the time to sacrifice a Panorama land. Potentially, the Redcap spot could be Raven's Crime to support Ravenous Rat shenanigans... Overall, I was happy with the way this deck performed -- it's not a dominating deck, but it's fun to play and I think with some tweaking it can be competitive!

Quick rundown -- Round 1) lost 2-1 to a deck with Bloom Tender / Realm Razer / Titanic Ultimatum /Kitchen Finks / Sarkhan Vol / Ajani Vengeant/ Cliffrunner Behemoth / Martial Coup / Woolly Thoctar. Just too many big threats, and hey, if someone gets Titanic Ultimatum to resolve on you twice, they deserve to win (FNM 0-1). Round 2) beat an underpowered Kithkin deck 2-0, basically a tweaked precon run by a guy just getting back into the game. I wasn't particularly confident after this match since he managed to beat me down to 6 life Game 1 with suboptimal creatures (FNM 1-1). Round 3) beat a Red Black Green mana ramp deck featuring Violent Ultimatum, Broodmate Dragon, Sprouting Thrinax (a pain), Profane Command, Kitchen Finks I think, 2-1. This kind of deck is perfect to play against with Nevermaker since it quickly runs itself out of cards and then Nevermaker can control the board. I still lost game two to a topdecked Broodmate Dragon though. Shriekmaw is great half the time, terrible half the time... it doesn't kill Demigod or even block him. And this was another matchup where Murderous Redcap didn't pull his weight (FNM 2-1). Round 4) Beat a very interesting Bant deck 2-1, a deck which featured Rafiq and his exalted friends with Cold-Eye Selkie and Spawnwrithe and again, Kitchen Finks. Cephalid Constable was even in there, though he never hit the board. How good is Rafiq? Plenty good. In this matchup, Shriekmaw was my best friend -- I think he has to be maindeck, even in Alara, where a third of the creatures are black or artifact. I got land-flooded Game 2, then he mulliganed to 5 Game 3 (FNM 3-1). Round 5) I drew into Top 8 against Faeries. Who the heck enjoys playing against Faeries? (FNM 3-1-1). Fun night. I got my $3 worth.

2/20/09 Conflux

Haven't posted in awhile, but I added Conflux to the store some time back. I have to say that Nicol Bolas Planeswalker is just a beautiful card. The art is wicked, the power level is obscene (though properly costed), and he's oozing with flavor. Path to Exile, Maelstrom Archangel, Banefire and Noble Hierarch are all obviously great... I think Rakka Mar, Scepter of Fugue and Martial Coup are underrated. I've already sold ten or more Font of Mythos. Whether the card is complete jank or not is debatable; clearly, people want eight Howling Mines so they can play Turbo-Fog or Underworld Dreams...

1/22/09 Type 2 Helix Pinnacle

So I dusted off Magic Workstation, figuring that rather than compulsively playing game after game of chess to unwind after my son goes to bed, I could unleash my OCD and insomnia on Magic the Gathering deck building again. And I've wanted to build a deck around Helix Pinnacle since the card came out.

Magic the Gathering Helix Pinnacle card

I figured there were two strategies to consider when designing the deck: 1) figure out a way to make a LOT of mana and go counter crazy or 2) stay alive till turn 40 and build the Pinnacle up a little every turn. Since I've always been a fan of win-condition-less Turbo Fog Howling Mine Gaea's Blessing decks, I chose option 2.

100 Pennies Makes a Dollar

2x Empyrial Archangel

4x Idyllic Tutor
2x Story Circle
2x Aura of Silence
4x Runed Halo
1x Helix Pinnacle
1x Mobilization

4x Wrath of God
4x Hallowed Burial

3x Kiss of the Amesha
4x Rampant Growth
4x Telling Time
1x Recollect

3x Seaside Citadel
3x Mystic Gate
4x Wooded Bastion
4x Bant Panorama
3x Island
4x Plains
3x Forest

Sideboard
1x Empyrial Archangel
1x Greater Auramancy
4x Eyes of the Wisent
1x Raking Canopy
1x Rule of Law
3x Declaration of Naught
4x Dragon's Claw

So I ended up with an Idyllic Tutor toolbox. I broke in this first version of the deck with several games on Workstation and went about 50/50, winning a few games by slowly adding counters onto Helix Pinnacle, a couple by attacking with endless Mobilization tokens, and a couple with the ridiculous and fun Empyrial Archangel.

As designed, the deck is intended to stall out creature-based decks like Doran and Elves, and it did well against that style of deck. Against Kithkin and red decks, you have to resolve Story Circle fast, and you have to protect the Circle against Oblivion Ring with Aura of Silence. I tried running Hindering Light as an anti O-Ring measure, but I ended up cutting it -- it might be necessary for the sideboard. When the deck wins, you feel completely in control by turn 9 or 10 -- you just have to live through that first creature rush.

Runed Halo turned out to be amazing, shutting down early threats and buying time for Wrath to come online. Almost every first Idyllic Tutor was used to fetch a Story Circle, which is the deck's all-star. Mobilization is a great alternate win-condition, a perfect late-game Tutor target. I was also very happy with the "glue" elements of the deck: Rampant Growth, Telling Time and Kiss of the Amesha... the deck manipulation and acceleration were useful, and Kiss got me right back into many games I was about to lose. There were a lot of good mtg cards I tried in the deck and eventually cut: Oblivion Ring, Prison Term and Recumbent Bliss among them. It just seemed wasteful to enchant my opponent's creatures and then Wrath them away. Ultimately, though, O-Ring might be too good not to play, due to opposing O-Rings and Planeswalkers.

Counterspell decks like Faeries are just going to be a nightmare to try to beat -- I went with 4x Eyes of the Wisent out of the board to maximize the chance of resolving one turn two game two. The deck also needs some help against Reveillark and Makeshift Mannequin builds which recur Wispmare and eventually run the deck out of removal. Relic of Progenitus maybe? Declaration of Naught is meant to be an answer out of the board to deck-crushing Fracturing Gusts, but I never got to board it in. Also, cruelly, Cruel Ultimatum control wrecked me in the face. I don't expect this deck to dominate tournaments, but it won often enough to keep it fun.

This deck can be very irritating to opponents since it does a whole lot of nothing and takes forever to win. It doesn't have a showy infinite mana combo that lets you win on a single turn. Instead, your opponent sees the loss by Helix Pinnacle coming, fifteen turns away... but what are they going to do about it? That's not nice -- but it's pretty satisfying, when it works. For me, about half the matches I played in. Give it a try. And suggestions to improve my decks are always welcome!

1/20/09 Magic and Recession

Is Magic the Gathering recession-proof? I'm probably more interested in this question than most since my ability to pay my rent is directly tied to people's hopefully continued interest in turning little colored pieces of waxed paper sideways. As everyone knows, we're staring into the darkness of a massive Recession, potentially a Depression, heck, we may in fact be walking into the gaping black maw of Void Maw. We'll know when the stars go out. Does Void Maw void? Is there ever a coming out of the other end?

And yet... video games keep selling. And so far... Magic the Gathering cards keep selling. In the face of economic uncertainty, people are spending their entertainment budget on reusable sources of amusement rather than blowing it on two-hour movie chunks or Applebees. Magic the Gathering cards are always a great entertainment value. You put your money in, you get your enjoyment out, and at the end, if you want to be done, you sell your cards off on ebay and get a refund on your investment. Or, you hold on to your collection forever, and every batch of new cards you add just increases the possible deck interactions exponentially. To have and to hold, and it's kind of a nest-egg too. Buy a Fat Pack or waste two hours watching Valkyrie? The cards are forever. How long is Tom Cruise? Like 4'10"?

Sometimes the people you meet at tournaments are a little snotty. They forget that they were ever a newb, or hell, maybe it's some weird exhibit of positioning in the nerd social heirarchy. Anyway, sometimes we forget that MOST of the people who play Magic the Gathering never go to a competitive tournament... they play with their friends around a kitchen table and they kick each other's butts with homebrews. These players are and always will be the life-blood of Magic. This is why I always try to be nice to new players at the shops, why everyone should be... because it's they, not the die-hard FNM -ers and even fewer PTQ -ers and Grand Prix -ers and Pro-Tour -ers, it's the millions of casual gamers and kids and collectors and stoners who buy the boxes and build 80 card decks and keep the Magic going year after year. Show some appreciation to the ones who, hopefully for a long time to come, make this game Recession-proof, Depression-proof, and distasteful to Horrors.

1/18/09 Progenitus and auctions

Magic the Gathering Progenitus card art

Progenitus wwuubbrrgg
Legendary Creature - Hydra Mythic Rare
Protection from everything (This creature can't be blocked, targeted, dealt damage, enchanted or equipped.)
When Progenitus is put into a graveyard from anywhere, shuffle it into its owner's library. 10/10 -- Magic the Gathering Conflux set

Pretty cool. Progenitus has protection from your mother, from card sleeves, and from your own fingers. It's going to be difficult to shuffle or tap. Progenitus raises the existential question "What is EVERYTHING?" or, at least, "What is EVERYTHING according to the game of Magic the Gathering?" Protection from everything is a much shorter way of saying Protection from white, red, blue, red, green, artifacts, lands and Protection from potential unprinted colorless creatures, planeswalkers, sorceries, instants and enchantments, and then perhaps Protection from opponents, tribal, undreamed-of R&D card types, graveyards (it kind of does have Protection from Graveyards, like Darksteel Colossus), abilities... probably other stuff I didn't think of. But is that EVERYTHING? Everything in the game of Magic? Does it have Protection from libraries? Protection from land-screw? Protection from bad die-rolls? Protection from trade binders? Protection from Prereleases? Protection from having to sit too close to a stinky person? Protection from discard, Evacuation, Wrath? (Gosh, Wizards, your ten mana Mythic rare isn't even indestructible? call me spoiled...) I think if you get you get working on it now, you can build an Extended turn-two kill with Progenitus, Mass Hysteria and a Hidetsugu's Second Rite, and, you know, fourteen to twenty assorted colored mana.

My ebay auctions start and end every Sunday, and I have a pretty big auction this week... I have been selling off the 5500 count lots I got from the local store's going out of business selloff, starting them at 49.99 -- they've been going higher than that, they're a good deal, and I only have three left now. I'm selling a few filter lands, a Darksteel Colossus, Rafiq of the Many, Birds of Paradise, played playsets of Master of Etherium and Ancestral Vision, some other good rares, all starting at .99 or .01. I'm pushing out extra lots this week... 14.99-19.99 for 72 listed rares is a good deal, plus 300 count uncommon and basic land lots, foil Island and Forest lots. THEN I've got dozens of playsets of playable commons and uncommons starting at .99, including Shriekmaw, Tattermunge Maniac, Dread Return, Slivers, Tribal Flames, Essence Warden, Telling Time, Putrefy, Lightning Helix, Boros Swiftblade, Trygon Predator, Guildmages, Desperate Ritual, Sensei's Divining Top, Seething Song, Affinity commons, artifact lands, Skullclamp, Cranial Plating, Eternal Witness...
